This magnificently illustrated book is aimed not only at collectors and textile specialists, but at all those interested in the creations of decorators from the 20th century. The first part explains the development of Art Deco in France and throughout Europe. The second part highlights the reactions of the defenders of modernity against the “decorative artists”. Even before the First World War, French decorators abandoned the sinuous forms of Art Nouveau to create spectacular interiors, decorated with rugs with floral, figurative or geometric motifs, woven by hand. In France, Sonia Delaunay, Eileen Gray and Jean Lurçat worked in texture, following the example of the Bauhaus and the Scandinavians. The fashion for abstract design was encouraged by limited-edition weavings based on the works of the great masters of the 20th century, while on the other side of the Atlantic, artists were inspired by European traditions to develop a distinctly American style.
