  • The 1960s were marked by unprecedented prosperity and technological advancement. This optimism corresponded to an extraordinary creative freedom until the oil crisis of 1973 which tempered this enthusiasm. The popularity of plastic is linked to this society of abundance. Yellow, red, orange, soft, hard, inflatable, it is identified with cheap, mass and disposable production. Based on a unique private collection, this book presents a selection of plastic objects created between 1960 and 1973. The Tupperware box, Kelton watch, Courrèges dress, the Valentine portable typewriter by Ettore Sottsass for Olivetti, the first chair by Verner Panton, an ABS plastic chair by Joe Colombo, Nana by Niki de Saint Phalle, Compression by César, the dome of the United States pavilion by Richard Buckminster Fuller at the Montreal Universal Exhibition or the aerial roof by Frei Otto and Günter Behnisch for the stadium of the Munich Olympic Games: they all bear witness – through their diversity, their spirit and sometimes their beauty – to the inventiveness of the time.
