Henri Sauvage (1873-1932) is one of the great names in 20th century French architecture. Comparing his writings, which helped establish his reputation as a "pioneer of the Modern Movement", with the reality of his practice, this book analyzes the little-known dimensions of his work: his activity as a speculator and builder of seaside and international hotels; the standoff which pitted him against the Parisian architect-voyeurs on the principle of a stepped building; his prefabrication experiments and his constructive inventions. His drawings preserved by the 20th century architecture archives center of the French Institute of Architecture, and old photographs, often unpublished, allow us to judge the richness of a work which dialogues with the great artistic debates, techniques and professionals of the time. From the Jika villa built in 1898 for Louis Majorelle to the transparent facades of the Decré department stores in Nantes, the reader is invited to explore the history of architecture and town planning from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 1990s.
