  • A precursor of ecological housing, Henri Quillé (1928-2018) is the creator of a singular and coherent body of work, most of which he designed on the island of Formentera.

Enlivened by the ideas of the CIAM, in which he participated, and inspired by Le Corbusier - he created the Comité provisoire de sauvegarde la villa Savoye in 1958 - he began his career with interior fittings and furniture design, before founding Atelier 12 with Jacques Riquois in 1958. The duo went on to create the Brutalist Pierres Levées complex in Meudon-Bellevue in 1966. The Atelier 12 collective, in which Roger and Edith Aujame collaborated from time to time, designed several projects in France.

On the island of Formentera, where he settled in 1972, he studied vernacular architecture and know-how to create a collection of 35 houses, ten of which are self-sufficient or energy self-sufficient. He makes extensive use of the Catalan vault, reducing openings to protect against the heat, and covering the exterior walls with a distinctive plaster. Coupled with thoughtful use of photovoltaic and wind energy, as well as water recovery systems, these principles enable the development of ecological homes, in tune with nature and the seasons.

Richly illustrated with plans, period and contemporary photographs, this first monograph on Henri Quillé reveals the work of a free-spirited architect, more than ever in tune with our times.
