Exhibition catalog for “Bordeaux 20s-30s, from Paris to Aquitaine”, from October 24, 2008 – January 28, 2009
Succeeding the formal freedom of Art Nouveau, a refined style appeared between the wars, subsequently called Art Deco. A city with classical architecture, Bordeaux did not escape the return to order. The ceramist René Buthaud and the painter Jean Dupas worked on public buildings alongside Alfred Janniot and Raymond Subes. Major figures like Maurice Daurat, Pierre Chareau, Jean Despujols or Raphaël Delorme also contributed to the artistic reputation of their city, even if they worked there only a little or not at all. Amateurs created important collections, such as the industrialist Henry Frugès, who brought together works by Brandt, Lalique and Dunand around Buthaud and Dupas, and commissioned the workers' town of Pessac from Le Corbusier. At the same time, on the Aquitaine coast, Charles Siclis, Louis Süe, Joseph Hiriart, Roger Expert, originally from the region, built sumptuous villas for a cosmopolitan clientele who traveled in Latécoère seaplanes built in Biscarosse. This book introduces us to this cultured and refined society.
