Slender and attractive, the Spine chair, which adorns the cover of this book, is one of the best-known objects of contemporary creation. It can be found in museums and in all design encyclopedias. Its author, André Dubreuil, after a career as an antique dealer and decorative painter, was one of the leaders of new English creativity in the mid-1980s with Mark Brazier-Jones and Tom Dixon. After handling concrete and iron as a conjurer, Dubreuil confronted other forms of tradition to give them new life. A return to quotation, to ornament, to the “craft” which was carried out without qualms: for him it is invention that counts above all else. The history of styles has never caught up with him, because he does not know where his profession will lead him tomorrow – a profession which has given rise to random experiments. He created nearly 400 enigmatic furniture-objects from 1985 to today – chairs, chests of drawers, mirrors, cabinets, clocks, lanterns... in which dreams, invention and mystery prevail over function.
