"The life and work of André Arbus (1903-1969)," writes Yvonne Brunhammer, "are the story of fidelity to French tradition and a quest for 'unity in the artistic life' of his time." The return to tradition, advocated in his article on furniture, opened a new path in 1935 between the traditional cabinetmaking defended by Ruhlmann and the standardized "equipment" of Le Corbusier. The decorator chooses the measure of the man, "this geometry of the heart" which he recognizes in the classicism of French furniture. Official supplier of National Furniture in the immediate post-war period, he created furniture, carpets and lighting for the Élysée, the Château de Rambouillet, ministries and embassies. This humanist demonstrates a very extensive creative register. In charge of the creation of prestigious ocean liners, and architect of “A house for the French family” shown at the 1937 World Expo, as well as farmhouses in the Pays de Crau or maritime monuments such as the Planier lighthouse, he devoted himself to sculpture from the 1950s, opening his mastery of classicism to a moving vision of man.
